The other companies’ websites have what they call explanations, but they are basically a copy-and-paste of the law itself – which does not make things easier to understand, it ends up taking a lot of time and that makes life stressful. Computers used in the processing or storage of data or information by insurance companies, financial institutions, and commercial enterprises have been exempt since 1985. Now some computer peripherals are included in the exemption. The state defines "computer peripheral" as "an ancillary device connected to the computer digitally, by cable, or by other medium, used to put information into or get information out of a computer." Examples of tax-exempt peripherals include, among other items, keyboards, monitors, hard drives, printers, scanners, and docking stations. Examples of peripherals that remain taxable include, among other items, adapters, firewall hardware, digital displays or billboards, and computerized phone systems. The Department of Revenue will accept refund claims for sales and use tax paid on exempt computers and computer peripherals if the claim is within the statute of limitations and has not previously been denied. The Nevada legislature recently enacted Senate Bill 3, which creates a one-time tax amnesty program for businesses or individuals doing business in Nevada. The amnesty period runs from February 1, 2021 to May 1, 2021. Penalties and interest will be waived if certain criteria are met. The tax must have been due and payable on or before June 30, 2020. In addition, the delinquent tax amount must be paid in full for the period, and it the must be paid during the amnesty period. The amnesty program does not apply to businesses or individuals who have entered into a compromise or settlement agreement with the state regarding the unpaid tax or assessment, or who are currently under audit but have not received a final deficiency determination prior to the last day of the amnesty period.
